Immediately after your tattoo
Immediately after your tattoo
Keep the second skin dressing applied by your artist on for a minimum of 24 hours and up to 72 hours, as advised. This medical-grade dressing protects your tattoo from airborne bacteria and helps contain any natural fluids such as plasma, ink, and blood. It also allows the skin to breathe while supporting the early healing process.
Removing the dressing
After 24-72 hours, remove the second skin in a warm shower. Gently peel it off slowly, keeping it parallel to the skin rather than pulling upwards. Start from the edges and pull towards the centre, allowing the warm water to help loosen the adhesive. Take your time to avoid irritation.
Cleaning your tattoo
Once the dressing is removed, gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and antibacterial soap to remove any remaining ointment, blood, or plasma. Use clean hands only and avoid anything abrasive. Pat the area dry with a clean towel or paper towel, making sure not to rub the skin.
Moisturising
After the skin is dry, apply a thin layer of the recommended aftercare cream, such as Tattoo Goo, Easy Tattoo, or Bepanthen. Follow your artist's instructions on how often to apply it: a very thin layer, usually between 3-6 times a day to keep the tattoo lightly moisturised and avoid applying too much product.
First 3 days
- Wash your tattoo 3-4 times a day with antibacterial soap.
- Always wash your hands thoroughly before cleaning your tattoo.
- After washing, reapply aftercare cream to keep the tattoo moisturised.
- Keep your tattoo moisturised at all times for the next 10 days. If it dries out, scabbing may form, which can pull ink out of your tattoo and affect its quality.
- Apply aftercare cream 3-5 times a day for 7-10 days.
- Keep pets away from your fresh tattoo to avoid contamination.
Healing process: 7-10 days
As your tattoo heals, it may itch. Do not scratch or peel the area. Allow any skin to shed naturally. Continue to moisturise to reduce itching and support healing.
During healing, you may notice silver skin or a lighter appearance of the tattoo. This is normal and will improve as the tattoo settles into your skin over the next 2-3 weeks.
What to avoid
- Swimming in pools, jacuzzis or soaking in the bath during the healing phase.
- Direct sunlight or tanning beds until fully healed. Once healed, always use high SPF 50+ sunscreen to protect the tattoo.
- Steam rooms and saunas until the tattoo is completely healed.
- Cardio, gym or activities that may cause excessive sweating for at least 1-2 weeks.
- Scratching, peeling or picking at skin or scabs. This can cause bleeding, loss of colour, scarring and a longer healing process.
Long-term care
Always protect your tattoo from sun exposure using sunscreen with at least SPF 30+ once healed. Do not use sunscreen on the tattoo in the first 7 days.
Follow all instructions provided by your artist to ensure the best results and long-lasting tattoo quality.
